Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I sign on to crew on Dove II ?
Reserving 2-3 months or more in advance may be a good idea. In 2011, crew berths on offshore passages were often full 2-3 months before the cast-off date, and some crew training weeks such as “Schooner School” were full 1-2 months ahead.
How do I reserve a berth on Dove II ?
Simply send an e-mail to Cap’n Mike at mike@schoonerdove.com and include your telephone number. He’ll contact you and follow up.
Is there parking and how much is it?
There is free or low-cost parking almost everywhere we drop anchor or tie up.
Does Dove II also take passengers in addition to sailing crew?
In the tropics during the winter, or if you charter Dove II, we sail with people of all experience levels. Otherwise, our programs and events are intended for more experienced sailors. Please contact Cap’n Mike to find out which opportunities are a good fit with your experience.
What is included when I sail on Dove II ?

Is there room on board for hard-sided or frame-and-roller luggage?
No. Luggage must be rolled up to be stored on board. If you must bring luggage that is hard-sided or contains a frame, please arrange for storage off the boat as it cannot be kept on board.
Are there any other "rules" while we are on board Dove II?
- There is no smoking on board or near Dove II or her tenders.
- All crew and passengers must read and sign our form Release of Liability before boarding. (See the Crew Packet and Passenger Packet link) There will be no exceptions, as the Release is intended to provide protection for all persons on board in addition to Cap’n Mike and Dove II.
- In the rare instances when children are on board, their parent/guardian must accompany them and assume legal responsibility for them.
- Your safety is our priority. The schedule and ports of call are subject to Cap’n Mike’s sole judgment due to weather and other safety concerns.
How about drinks? Should I bring those?
We supply non-alcoholic drinks. You may bring your own alcohol aboard. For safety reasons, alcohol consumption may be restricted while the vessel is under way.
Is Dove II safe?
Absolutely. The Schooner Dove II complies with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and is equipped with modern safety equipment including long-range radar.
How steady is the sailing? Am I likely to get seasick?
The Schooner Dove II is a stable, gentle vessel. If you are susceptible to motion sickness, please bring your medication for motion sickness and consider taking it as recommended by your doctor. Of course, we cannot officially advise you to take any medication.
Is there a bathroom on the boat? A shower?
Yes, Dove II has an attractive marine bathroom with a shower-head and hot-cold water.
What should I wear?
We have a list of recommended clothing items to pack. Please wear flat soled shoes. No spike heels or platform shoes.
Do you ever cancel due to bad weather?
Dove II sails when it is sunny, also in rain and other moderate weather situations. Cap’n Mike monitors land and marine weather forecasting services and the ship’s radar to watch fronts and cells in the area on days when inclement weather is possible.
What happens if it starts raining when we're out?
In the event of rain, we'll still continue. (A little rain never hurt anyone.) If worse conditions are anticipated, we’ll head for a safe anchorage.
How large is the Schooner Dove II?
The Dove II is a 63 foot schooner with 45 feet usable on deck. She can sleep up to 6 persons comfortably in addition to the captain and first mate.
Is Dove II handicapped accessible?
Unfortunately, our schooner is not wheelchair accessible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may present.
What should I know about payment?
After Cap’n Mike confirms availability, you reserve your berth by sending him a 50% deposit by check in US dollars, or paying through PayPal on the www.schoonerdove2.com web site. The other 50% can be paid by check or PayPal at least 3 weeks before boarding, or in cash at the time of boarding. Please see the Dove II Rates link for the amount that applies to your excursion.
The amount paid in advance may be refunded in case of serious family illness or worse, or if Cap’n Mike cancels the entire excursion due to unsafe weather or other conditions. Cap’n Mike, Dove II and Dove II LLC shall not be obligated to refund more than the amount paid in advance under any circumstances.
